The treatments process at Kalari Kovilakom.

Ayurveda is more about addressing the root cause of illness rather than simply managing symptoms. Please approach it with an open mind to achieve the best results. Since the treatments offered at Kalari Kovilakom are highly personalized and tailored to an individual's doshas (bio-energies), summarizing the entire process, procedures, and methods in just a few lines is difficult. However, the outline below will help you plan for your Ayurvedic treatment better. To make it clearer, we have translated technical Sanskrit names. For a detailed explanation, please email us.

  • Stage 1 - Examination & Diagnosis

  • Though submitting the preliminary assessment form at the time of booking helps, all treatments start with a detailed examination of the patient using diagnostic procedures. This is done by observing, palpating (pulse checking, i.e., nadi), and interrogating. This stage helps the doctor (Vaidya) to personalize the treatment for your health needs and address any concerns you may have.

  • Stage 2 - Preparatory or Poorvakarma Stage

  • The word Poorva means "prior" or "earlier," and in this stage, the body is prepared for detoxification. This involves two main processes -: a) Internal and external oleation, known as the Snehanam procedure. Internal oleation is achieved by consuming medicated ghee, while external oleation involves therapeutic massages. b) Sweating, using direct and indirect heat sources, referred to as the Swedanam procedure. Various methods are available for both oleation and sweating stages, and the best one suited for your condition is selected for optimal results.

  • Stage 3 - Elimination and Cleansing Stage - Pradhana Karma or Shodana Stage

  • The word "Pradhana" closely means "primary," and in this stage, the body is cleansed through toxin elimination. Targeted therapies, including therapeutic purging, medicated enemas, and nasal treatments, are effectively used to eliminate accumulated toxins. This stage revitalises your body and enhancing overall well-being.

It is at this stage that the doctor chooses suitable methods from the Panchakarma Protocol. For your information, the major techniques used in the Panchakarma Protocol include Virechana (purgation), Nasyam (nasal cleansing), Vamana (therapeutic vomiting), Kashayavasthi (medicinal enema), Snehavasthi (oil enema), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting). Only techniques suitable for your health condition will be utilized.

  • Stage 4 - Rejuvenation and Corrective - Paschatkarma Karma Stage

  • The word "Paschat" roughly means "subsequent," and in this stage, the body undergoes rejuvenation and correction through various gentle treatments. Treatments include therapeutic massages using warm herbal pouches, pouring medicated oils and milk over the body, and applying soothing medicinal pastes to the head. These therapies enhance muscle strength, calm the mind, and restore balance, ensuring optimal health and well-being for each individual. Physicians provide personalized diet and lifestyle recommendations to help maintain the benefits of detoxification and treatments.

  • Stage 5 - Secondary treatment or Upakarma Stage

  • Upakarma, or supporting treatments, are provided only at the doctor’s discretion and are generally customized to the patient’s doshas and condition. These treatments are typically offered to patients undergoing longer treatments, as shorter stays may not allow time for them. Based on individual diagnosis, they may include specialized eye, head, neck, ear, oral, and face therapies, as well as targeted oil applications (Vasthy) for specific body areas.

    Suporting Process for Ayurvedic Treatments.

Each stage of Ayurvedic treatment is supported by the following integral parts of the treatment protocol. These elements are necessary to complete the healing process.

  • Interanl and External Medicines

  • Internal medicines, taken as prescribed, are vital in Ayurvedic therapy and overall healing. Depending on one's condition, they may include Kashayam (herbal decoction), Choornam (powder), Gulika (tablets), Lehyam (herbal marmalade), Gritham (medicated ghee), and Arishtam (fermented decoction), each addressing specific health needs. External massage oils, used in Ayurvedic procedures, penetrate deeply to detoxify, stimulate lymph flow, and rejuvenate cells. Both internal and external medicines, under the doctor’s guidance, are essential to the healing process.

  • Strict Vegeterain Diet

  • In Ayurvedic healing, diet and lifestyle are essential components of the treatment process. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of six tastes (Rasas) that interact with the five elements in the body to balance bio-energies. Fresh, organic food is recommended, and mindful eating is encouraged. At Kalari Kovilakom, doctors prescribe personalized Sattvic diets for patients, and meals are prepared according to these instructions using locally sourced, freshly plucked vegetables from the herbal garden. The food is unbelievably tasty and plays a key role in revitalizing and healing the body.

  • Yoga and Meditation

  • Yoga and meditation, ancient practices with profound healing benefits, are essential parts of the treatment and healing process. Yoga, through mindful postures and breathwork, helps restore balance and calms both the body and mind. Meditation practices, such as focusing on a candle flame, promote clarity, peace, and positive energy, further enhancing emotional well-being. Personalized guidance from experienced masters ensures that clients feel at ease and comfortable during their practice. This holistic approach fosters deep relaxation, emotional balance, and overall well-being.

  • Satsang Meets

  • Satsang, meaning ‘true company,’ is a practice where people gather to listen, discuss, and reflect on spiritual teachings. At Kalari Kovilakom, patients engage in Satsangs that include discourses, classical music, dance performances, mantra chanting, meditation, yoga talks, and Kalaripayattu demonstrations. This practice helps uplift the spirit, enhances positive energy, and supports the healing journey.

Dining at Kalari Kovilakom

During your stay at Kalari Kovilakom, diet and lifestyle are integral to the Ayurvedic healing process. Coffee, tea, alcohol, cigarettes, and non-vegetarian food such as meat, fish, and eggs are not permitted. The cuisine follows a Sattvic diet, featuring traditional Kerala vegetarian meals made from fresh, organic ingredients sourced from the resort’s herbal garden and local markets. Almost No oil, salt, or spices are used, yet the food remains uniquely flavorful. Meals are customized to each guest’s dosha, with strict adherence to Ayurvedic principles. Mindful eating is encouraged to enhance the healing process.
